Travelodge, the popular budget hotel chain, reports that in a recent survey of its customers, one in five thought overseas travel was too expensive and one in three said they planned to stay in the UK for their main holiday this year.
Other UK holiday-related businesses are also noting a growing interest in staying local, as evidenced by a significant increase in definitive bookings this year. Luxury camping site Canopy & Stars notes that traffic has increased by 15 percent per week since April and is expected to rise to 15 percent before pre-pandemic levels. sykes Holiday Cottages has also seen a significant increase of 75 to 35 percent in holiday bookings for the 2022 holiday period. The domestic travel industry has taken note of these trends and expects them to continue this year.
While this may overshadow our continental neighbors this summer, the steady rise in ‘home breaks’ is good news for the UK tourism industry, especially those struggling to survive the two-year covid stagnation. In fact, it provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many businesses to build a solid foundation for future growth.
Neil Bevan, Managing Director of The Manor & Ashbury Resorts, located in the stunning Devon countryside, agrees; “It’s great to see more people joining us and exploring the beautiful parts of the country. From the breathtaking views on the moors to the nearby beaches – it’s a great vacation destination, especially for families.”
Good Housekeeping magazine notes, “There are many advantages to choosing to vacation in the UK rather than abroad. Not only can you leave your passport at home and avoid the hassle of airports, you can often travel by car or train, making your flight-free trip a more relaxing part of your vacation.”
“A home vacation in the UK is more than just a practical convenience. Our island group boasts 12,500 miles of rugged coastline, 15 national parks with natural, unspoiled beauty and lush wildlife, and endless opportunities to indulge in mouth-watering seasonal produce, home-grown wine and local cuisine. “
